Next week we are having our very first board meeting after the election. We are meeting on Wednesday 21st of October in front of the OVGU Mensa at 12:00 . This time we are moslty discussing responsibilities of the new board members and ideas for the upcoming events.
We are very happy to announce the first talk in 2020 of the MAgdeburg Lectures on Optimization and Control (MALOC) series, this time organized by the SIAM Student Chapter Magdeburg and given by Prof. Zoran Tomljanović from J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatia. The MALOC lectures are a special format, where every semester experts from the field of control and optimization are invited to come to Magdeburg to present their latest research to mathematicians, engineers and every interested person here in Magdeburg.
Soon enough we will be welcoming a new studying year, with which the current SIAM officers hand their responsibilities to the next board which will hopefully bring many new faces with unique personalities and fresh ideas. We are looking forward to having YOU as a candidate in the SIAM student chapter elections happening next month.
You are invited to join our last organizationaal lunch this year, Thursday 17th of September. We will first gather 12:20 at MPI and then 12:30 in front of the OVGU Mensa. Join and see what funny/scientific activities are we planning for this year and how things are organized behind curtains!
You are invited (and strongly encouraged) to get your bike ready for a trip to Barleber See I, taking this route, enjoying the hopefully sunny weather and fresh breeze. After the go ride we of course get hungry :-D , so we will find a nice green spot for a picnic and relax for sometime.
You are invited to join an open air lunch next week Thursday 20th of August. We will first gather 11:50 at MPI and then 12:00 in front of the OVGU Mensa, where you can get some food and then head to MPI and have lunch in the MPI garden.
As we slowly get back to normal life after the events of the last couple of months, why not let your hair down, have a beer in hand, relax, and enjoy a nice evening with friends? The SIAM Student Chapter has just the right solution - a relaxing evening in a beer garden while playing easy-to-learn card games.
Our next organizational meeting will be on Thursday, 23rd of July, at 12 noon. This meeting will be virtually using the BigBlueButton (BBB) platform.
Martyna Soszynska had the pleasure to be a participant in the University of Reading's SIAM-IMA Student Conference.
New year is here so is the cold (Winter is here), but not to worry!!! We (SIAM's chapter in Magdeburg) would like to invite you to an evening of card/board/roll playing evening. we will arrange some games. However you are welcome to bring your own games.
Today opens the biggest Chrismas Markt close to the Rathaus and we would like to book YOU on the 2nd of December for a fun evening there.
Learn about building a network covering Magdeburg for a citizen science project, designing games using artificial intelligence and outdoor climbing. You can get to know and learn about all these topics during this event in interesting presentations.
All while having a nice drink in a cozy bar atmosphere.
Sticking to our tradition, semester opening BBQ will be waiting for you starting from 5 pm on 9th of October at the MPI garden, where we have space to party, eat, play flunkyball, frisbee and badminton if you like (bring your own game!). It is expected to be warmer by then 'fingers crossed!' and in case of rain we are well prepared :)
On 11th April we organized a field trip to the transformer station operated by the company 50Hertz in Berlin, together with our friends from the GAMM/SIAM Student Chapter Berlin. After arriving on the site in Neuenhagen we had the opportunity to listen to interesting presentations.
The company 50Hertz introduced itself as one of the 4 major transmission system operators in Germany. About 18 million people in northern and eastern Germany obtain their electricity via the network operated by 50Hertz. The increasing amount of reneweable energy sources and the embedding into the common European power grid provide interesting challenges.
We then found out more about the role applied mathematics plays in the business of the company. The mathematical modelling of the electricity market was explained to us. The efficiency can be increased by using optimization techniques. On the one hand models are interesting for acquiring long term forecasts of major market developments. On the other hand short term predictions are very valuable and demand shorter computing times. This is where techniques of model order reduction become interesting.
Mathematical approaches also are an important tool in the field of strategic network planning. Here, it is important to guarantee the stability of the system. With diligent planning it is possible to intercept any possible malfunction.
Another highlight was the following guided tour around the transformer station. We had the opportunity to experience the massive dimensions of this machine with all our senses. What in mathematics is often represented by a node in a graph, we can now connect to an image from reality.
FInally we got to know the students from Berlin better over coffee and cake. We hat the opportunity to exchange our thought on the experience and other aspects of applied mathematics and studen life.
